Stay safe on the road during snow storms
The best advice for driving in winter weather is to not do it! However, there are many times when it cannot be avoided. You've winterized your home - now it's time to do the same with your car.
Prepare your car for the winter:
- Check tire pressure and tread
- Inspect all belts and hoses
- Make sure the battery is fully charged
- Change the oil, switching to a thinner grade of engine oil for better performance in colder temperatures
- Inspect the wipers and wiper fluid to ensure better visibility
- Ensure your lights are working, check your brakes
- Keep a windshield scraper and small broom for ice and snow removal in your car
- Maintain at least a half tank of gas throughout the winter season.
If you must drive during hazardous winter conditions, be prepared:
- Stock your car with a survival kit (Blankets, shovel, flashlight, batteries, extra warm clothing, battery booster cables, energy snacks)
- Match your speed to the road and weather conditions.
- Brake before you turn a corner.
- If you go into a skid, turn your wheels into the skid and accelerate slightly to regain control of your vehicle. Feel free to check out this video for more instructions on skid recovery.
- Keep sand or kitty litter in your trunk to put down near your tires if you get stuck or need extra traction.
- And, as always, do NOT text, dial, drink and drive!
